Whatnot live selling
A second platform, not a replacement. We run Whatnot from the same studios, with the same hosts, across a wide range of categories.
In short
Whatnot is a live shopping app built around auctions and timed drops, where buyers follow individual hosts rather than brands. We have recently started running sessions there, and the reason is straightforward: the studio, the lighting, the hosts and the product are already in one room, so adding a second platform costs far less than standing one up from scratch. Whatnot began in collectibles and has broadened considerably since — shelf-stable food arrived in 2025 and fresh food by April 2026 — and we can run most consumer categories there. TikTok Shop remains the main channel for almost every brand we work with, because that is where the volume and the discovery are. Whatnot adds a different kind of buyer: one who returns for a host rather than arriving from an algorithm.

How it works
Work out the format
Auction, timed drop or straight selling — the right answer depends on your margins and how much stock you want to move per session. We will tell you which we think fits before anything is booked.
Set up the shop
Seller account, category approval, listings and payout setup.
Build the room
Whatnot audiences return for a host, not a brand. The first sessions are about establishing who is on camera and when they are on.
Run and read
Sessions on a fixed schedule, with analysis afterwards of which lots moved and at what price.
TikTok Shop is where the volume is. Whatnot is where the regulars are.
TikTok Shop did roughly $50.3 billion in global GMV in the first half of 2026 against Whatnot’s roughly $8 billion, according to Momentum Works figures reported in 2026. We will not pretend the second number is the first. But a buyer who comes back for a host every week is worth more per head than one the algorithm delivers once.
Common questions
What is Whatnot?
Whatnot is a live shopping app built around auctions and timed drops, where buyers follow individual hosts rather than brands. Sellers went from more than $8 billion in sales across 2025 to roughly that same figure in the first half of 2026 alone, according to company figures reported by Wikipedia and Momentum Works data cited by Lengow in 2026. It began in collectibles and trading cards and has since added categories including shelf-stable food in 2025 and fresh food by April 2026.
Should we be on Whatnot instead of TikTok Shop?
Not instead — alongside. TikTok Shop is far larger, at around $50.3 billion in global GMV in the first half of 2026 against Whatnot’s roughly $8 billion, per Momentum Works figures reported in 2026, and that is where discovery happens. What Whatnot adds is a returning audience that follows a host, which is a different and more durable kind of customer. We run both for clients where it makes sense, and we will say plainly if we think your catalogue only justifies one.
What kinds of products work on Whatnot?
A wider range than the platform’s reputation suggests. It grew up in collectibles — sports cards and trading card games were the top two US categories in 2025 — and that heritage still shapes how buyers behave. But the catalogue has broadened: shelf-stable food arrived in 2025 and fresh food by April 2026, alongside fashion, beauty and general consumer goods. We can run most categories there. What matters more than the category is whether a host can make the session feel like an event rather than a storefront.
Do we need a different host for Whatnot?
Usually not, but the skill is different. TikTok Shop live rewards a host who can restate a product’s hook to an audience that keeps turning over. Whatnot rewards a host who builds a returning room and can run an auction — managing pace, reading the comments, and knowing when to hold an item back. Our hosts do both, and we will tell you honestly if your category needs someone with specific category knowledge we do not have.
Can you run both platforms at once?
Yes, and the studio makes that straightforward because the room, the lighting and the product are already set up. What does not transfer automatically is the audience: a following on one platform does not arrive on the other. Each needs its own schedule and its own run of show.
How do Whatnot’s fees compare?
Whatnot charges sellers a commission on each sale plus payment processing; published 2026 figures vary between sources, so check the current rate in Whatnot’s own seller terms rather than relying on a blog. TikTok Shop’s US referral fee is 6% on most categories and 5% on jewelry as of 2026, with payment processing included. The larger cost on either platform is usually the creator or host commission, not the platform fee.
