Straight answers about selling on TikTok Shop.

The questions brands actually ask us, answered without a sales pitch. Where published sources disagree, we say so rather than picking the convenient number.

Common questions

Getting started

Do I need an agency to sell on TikTok Shop?

No. Plenty of brands run their own TikTok Shop successfully, and if you have someone in-house who can manage listings, recruit creators and go live several times a week, that is often the cheaper path. An agency earns its place when the work exceeds what one person can hold — typically once a creator programme has more than a handful of people in it, or once you want live selling on a schedule you cannot staff yourself.

How long does it take to make money on TikTok Shop?

Expect three to six months before the channel is reliably profitable, assuming the product suits the platform. The first month is setup and compliance. The second is learning which creators and which angles convert, which almost always produces surprises. Real volume usually arrives once spend is concentrated behind the two or three things that worked. Brands that expect month one to pay for itself are generally disappointed.

What kinds of products sell best on TikTok Shop?

Products that demonstrate well on camera in under thirty seconds, priced roughly between $15 and $45. Beauty and personal care is the largest US category at around a fifth of GMV. Apparel is the biggest by volume and the most competitive. Food and beverage has grown quickly. A product that needs explaining, fitting, or a long consideration period is a poor fit regardless of how good it is.

Is TikTok Shop worth it for a small brand?

It can be, but the maths matter. Between the platform referral fee, creator commission, ad spend, fulfillment and returns, a meaningful share of the selling price is gone before cost of goods. If your margin cannot absorb that and still leave something, the channel will generate revenue and no profit. We would rather tell you that on the first call than three months in.

What do I need before launching a TikTok Shop?

A verified seller account, product listings with compliant copy and imagery, any category documentation your products require, a fulfillment route that can handle small parcel volume, and a decision on creator commission. Categories like supplements, cosmetics and food take longer because the documentation has to clear review before listings go live.

What it costs

How much does a TikTok Shop agency charge?

Most agencies in the US work on a monthly retainer, a percentage of sales, or both. Retainers commonly run from the low thousands to the low tens of thousands a month depending on scope. The structure matters more than the headline number: ask whether the retainer is charged on top of the percentage or credited against it. Ours is credited against it, which is not the norm.

What fees does TikTok Shop itself charge?

As of 2026, US sellers pay a referral fee of 6% on most categories and 5% on jewelry, calculated on the customer payment plus platform discounts and excluding tax, with payment processing included. There are no listing or monthly fees for US sellers. Refund admin, return shipping and fulfillment are charged separately. Source: FastMoss, 2026.

What should I budget beyond the agency fee?

Four things people routinely forget: product samples for creators, which is a real and continuing cost; ad spend, if you are amplifying what works; commission to creators, which comes out of each sale; and returns. Across platform fee, creator commission, fulfillment, ads and returns, total take can approach 30% of the selling price, per FastMoss’s 2026 analysis.

What commission should we offer TikTok Shop creators?

It varies by category. FastMoss’s 2026 medians were around 15% for beauty and personal care, 20% for health, 10% for womenswear and for sports and outdoor, and 8% for fashion accessories. Offering below the category median makes recruitment considerably harder, because creators can see what everyone else is paying.

Choosing and working with an agency

What should I ask a TikTok Shop agency before hiring them?

Five questions that separate agencies quickly. How do you choose creators beyond follower count? What proportion of creators who receive samples actually post? What do you do once a video or a creator performs well? What exactly will you report each week? And is your fee charged on top of a percentage, or credited against it? Vague answers to the first three usually mean the agency runs influencer campaigns rather than an affiliate programme.

Is DCA an official TikTok Shop partner?

Yes. DCA holds four TikTok certifications — representing brands, representing talent, affiliate marketing, and the entertainment side of TikTok — and works directly with executives at TikTok rather than through a partner support queue. Most agencies describing themselves as TikTok Shop agencies hold no certification at all, so it is worth asking anyone you speak to for their documentation.

Who owns the shop and the data if we part ways?

You should, always. The seller account, the sales data and the customer relationship belong to your company, and any agency should operate under permissions you grant and can revoke. An agency that wants the seller account in its own name is a problem, because it means leaving costs you the channel.

Should we hire an agency or a freelancer?

A freelancer is usually cheaper and works well for shop management alone. Where it breaks down is live selling and creator programmes at volume: one person cannot host sessions, run production, recruit creators and manage compliance simultaneously. The honest dividing line is whether the work is one job or four.

What does a weekly report from an agency actually look like?

It should show the whole funnel, not just revenue. Creators contacted, samples sent, how many of those creators posted, videos produced, GMV by creator and by video, and which creators came back. Revenue alone tells you what happened. The funnel tells you why, and where it is stuck.

Creators and live selling

How do you find creators for a TikTok Shop?

By matching category and past selling performance, not follower count, which is a poor predictor of sales. We work mainly through partner specialist networks that already hold thousands of vetted US creators organised by category, which means matched creators in the first week rather than a recruitment exercise that takes months.

How many creators does a brand need?

Fewer than most expect at the start and more than most expect later. The pattern is a small seeded group to find which angles convert, then concentrated recruitment behind the two or three that work. Recruiting hundreds of creators before you know what sells produces volume and very little revenue.

How much of TikTok Shop’s sales actually come from live selling?

Published estimates disagree sharply, and anyone quoting a single confident figure is overreaching. One 2026 analysis put live at 26% of US GMV; eMarketer reported the share falling from 26% in July 2024 to 18% in July 2025; and Momentum Works and Tabcut data for the first half of 2026 put livestreaming at around 8% of US GMV, with the shop tab slightly over half and in-feed video around 40%. What is not disputed is that live converts several times better than feed content — the argument is about how much total volume runs through it.

What is Countdown Bidding on TikTok Shop?

Countdown Bidding is TikTok’s live auction format, introduced during 2026. A host sets a starting bid and a timer, viewers bid during the stream, and the highest bid when the clock runs out wins. An extended auction resets the clock when a late bid lands, which is what creates a genuine bidding war. TikTok Shop Academy documented the feature in June 2026, and a promotional Auction Day campaign ran from 19 to 31 March 2026.

Do auctions help a new TikTok Shop build an audience faster?

They can, and the reason is structural rather than magical. A countdown gives people a reason to arrive at a specific time and a reason to stay until the end, neither of which an ordinary live stream provides. For a shop with no established following, that is a faster route to a returning room than waiting for the algorithm. Worth knowing: TikTok has published the mechanics in detail but no adoption or performance data, so anyone quoting hard auction numbers is estimating.

What do we need to run auctions on TikTok Shop?

An Account Health Rating above 150, no active account restrictions, no intellectual property violations, and a Shop Performance Score of 2.5 or higher, or none yet if you are new. Hosts need a Creator Health Rating above 150. One trap to know about: winning bids skip the usual one-hour cancellation window, promotional discounts do not apply, and you cannot change terms once an auction has started — so condition and authenticity have to be described accurately on air.

How many hours of live selling a week does a brand need?

We generally recommend starting at six to nine hours spread across several sessions rather than one long one. Below about four hours a week it is difficult to build the repeat audience that makes live selling work. Sellers who treat live as their primary channel run considerably more.

Can we use our own team to host live sessions?

Yes, and in some categories a founder on camera outperforms a professional host because the story matters. What you need either way is a consistent setup and someone who can hold a room for an hour. We can coach your team or provide hosts, and we can mix the two — your founder on camera with our operator running production.

Operations

Do we have to use your fulfillment?

No. If you already have a third-party logistics provider that performs, we work with it. We operate inside a partner 3PL’s warehouse in Thousand Oaks and can place your fulfillment there if it suits you, but it is never a condition of working with us. Many of our clients keep the provider they arrived with.

What happens if a product goes viral and we run out of stock?

Selling out mid-campaign does real damage: the listing loses momentum, creators who are mid-flight have nothing to point at, and the ones who posted lose commission. This is the main practical argument for the people running your shop being in the same building as your inventory, which is how we are set up. It is also why re-order lead times should be understood before a campaign starts, not during one.

Can you help us source or manufacture the product?

We can, but it is a separate service with its own agreement and fee, and most brands do not need it. If you have a supplier you are happy with, keep it — we are not trying to get between you and your factory. It is worth a conversation when a factory cannot scale to the volume TikTok demand creates, when landed cost leaves no room for creator commission, or when you want a second source.

What gets a TikTok Shop suspended?

Most suspensions trace back to product compliance rather than content: unapproved claims in listings or creator videos, missing category documentation, restricted ingredients, or intellectual property complaints. Health and beauty categories carry the most risk because the claims creators naturally want to make are often the ones that are not allowed. Briefing creators on approved and prohibited language is the single most effective preventative step.
